Value of professionalism
In this era of economic uncertainty, professionalism has become the winning formula for companies navigating challenges. As we head towards 2025, the global economy remains precarious. While quantifying the legal risks faced by Chinese companies domestically and internationally is quite the impossible mission, it is clear these risks can significantly impact operations and strategic decisions.
Rising litigation, a newly revised Company Law, increasingly stringent cross-border data transfer regulations and a volatile international trade environment all reflect a single truth: using professional expertise to resolve business challenges is not merely a skill, but a means of survival.
In our cover story, New major player, we explore how the legal profession supports Chinese companies pursuing outbound investments despite geopolitical resistance and the risks of diverse international markets. Facing complex global political regimes and transaction disputes, specialists from various law firms and arbitration centres revealed how businesses can seize opportunities in uncertainty.
More than ever, businesses require professional and reliable teams that can help develop effective strategies, and identify and mitigate potential losses in a complex legal and market environment.
China Business Law Journal hosted the CBLJ Forum with the theme of “seizing emerging opportunity, managing global risk”. Held at the Grand Hyatt Shanghai on 1 November, the full-day event gathered more than 500 Chinese and international business executives and in-house counsel from about 300 enterprises. Insights of 90-plus speakers across 13 panel sessions are recorded in Shelter from the rain, focusing on strategic advice and cutting-edge case studies.
This event served not only as a legal gathering but also as a redefinition of professional value. The inaugural In-house Impact Awards, launched at the forum, shone a spotlight on legal practitioners who have often worked behind the scenes.
Awards were presented to 46 exemplary corporate projects, alongside sub-awards emphasising the value of in-house counsel to both companies and the broader market.
However, navigating challenges is often too daunting for law firms alone, making the support of external lawyers essential – like adding experienced extra hands to a ship’s crew in a storm.
This year, 100 lawyers practising PRC law, and 80 practising in international law firms or overseas, were selected as A-List: Visionaries.
These individuals are leaders in their fields and possess keen industry insights, driving innovation within their firms and actively engaging in industry associations and public organisations. We thank all nominees for their contributions to market research and offer our heartfelt congratulations to these lawyers.
